I hauled my overweight suitcase into the trunk of our car and hopped in the front seat. After a 2-minute drive we were at our destination. The charming associates at the Sacher Vienna welcomed me to the legendary hotel and I entered the beautiful guestroom I had been given for the night. What better way to leave Vienna for 3 weeks than residing in this elegance, tradition and style. Pre-dinner drinks in the Blaue Bar, a multiple-course menu at the Rote Bar, short but sweet slumber and a wake-up call at 04:00 AM. I was ready for take-off. The hotel chauffeur cruised smoothly through the streets of Vienna to the airport and sent me off via Frankfurt with the grandiose Airbus 380 to New York.

I breathed in the humid air of the city, laden with a pungent fragrance ranging from take-away coffee to Chinese dumplings and couldn't stop smiling. After an exciting weekend in the city that never sleeps, I jumped on the convenient Campus-2-Campus bus, leaving the lights of Manhattan behind as we headed towards the beautiful Cornell campus, embedded in the breathtaking nature of upstate New York. The four hour ride passed quickly as I tried hard to wrap my head around the fact that I was now finally headed to my destination. The months of strenuous preparation for the Young Hotelier Award, the helpful seminars, the exhilarating presentation day itself, and the exciting award ceremony were now culminating into this main prize and I was headed to Cornell University.

Classes commenced promptly at 08:30 AM the following Monday and the 2-week stay at the renowned hotel school was an experience of a lifetime - an honor and pleasure to attend. The courses and professors were of highest standard. The generosity of the Diversey scholarship allowed for me to attend 3 courses: Building the Human Capital Base, Essential Skills in Leadership, and Interactive Marketing. The volume of knowledge and experience that I walk away with will accompany me for the remainder of my professional and personal life. The real value of the experience is created by the participants. Attendees from across the globe, representing a wide range of hospitality careers bring with them so much information and perspectives which truly add to one's understanding of professional dynamics, hospitality trends, personal networks, and general life know-how.

Attending the courses at the School of Hotel Administration at Cornell University is an exceptional opportunity - and with determination and hard work it's possible! The time and effort that I dedicated towards the Young Hotelier Award and the unforgettable prize(s) that I was granted have made me realize the essence of hard work and the outcomes thereof. To future candidates of the competition - I can only recommend that you grasp the chance to participatein this challenging yet inspiring experience.

I would like to thank all those involved in the organization and realization of the Young Hotelier Award - an exemplary initiative to challenge, encourage, and develop young talent in the dynamic, exciting, and rewarding hospitality industry.Thank you!

1.) Hotel Restaurant - creating interesting and relevant F&B outlets in city hotels.
One of today's main challenges in the hospitality industry is creating, establishing and maintaining new F&B concepts. How can both local clientele and in-house guests be attracted to Hotel F&B outlets and what does it take to reach success?

2.) What are THE key factors for young workers in order to give the hotel industry a "preferred employer" status?
Provide an in-depth analysis and best practice examples.

Nach einem arbeitsamen Tag kam ich am Abend des 14.04.2011 im Le Meridian Etoilet an. Ein toller Start für meinem drei tägigem Aufenthalt, begann mit einem freundlichem check in und einem Gespräch über die Gründe meines Aufenthaltes. Spontan bekam ich von der netten Rezeption ein upgrade zu einem der neuen Excecutive Rooms.

Bei strahlendem Sonnenschein begab ich mich am morgen des zweiten Tages über den im Frühlingskleid geschmückten Champs Elysees in Richtung des ECA Institutes. Dort wurde ich schon von Professor Liz Craigh und Veronique Sournies (Internetional Relations Director CMH University) erwartet. Sie stellten mich einigen Studenten vor mit welchen ich zuerst die Möglichkeit bekam, mich über deren Studium und meinen Werdegang auszutauschen.

Pünktlich um 10 Uhr begann dann das Think Tank Seminar mit dem Thema "Radically Rethinking Service" und der Name war Programm. Mit einer Beeindruckenden Vorstellung von technischen Möglichkeiten sowie Produkten und Angeboten im Bereich der Hotellerie hat mir dieser Tag, trotz meiner voran gegangen intensiven Auseinandersetzung mit dem Thema Gen Y während des YHA, eine komplett neuen Eindruck von den Zukunftsmöglichkeiten unserer Industrie vermittelt. Mit der persönlichen Vorstellung von Firmen und deren Produkte (z.B. Travel Portal reviewing, augmented reality oder virtuelle 360 grad touren), Video live Konferenzen nach England und Amerika, sowie vielen offenen Diskussionsrunden gewann ich einen faszinierenden Eindruck über die neuen Perspektiven der Hotellerie. Am ende der Veranstaltung durfte ich noch den Young Hotelier Award sowie meinen besten Slide vorstellen und wurde von der CMH University als Ehrengast geehrt. Zum Abend wurde ich dann von Liz zu einem kleinem Empfang, mit den Seminar Teilnehmern und ehemaligen Studenten der Universität eingeladen. Ein toller Abschluss eines spannenden Tages.

Am nächsten morgen machten wir uns zu einer Tour durch die Welt der Pariser Luxushotellerie auf. Veronque Sournies begleitete mich persönlich auf einer Tour der luxuriösen Gegensätze. Vom Ultra futuristischen Hotel 7 bis zum majestätischen Shangri- La Hotel in welchem wir am ende des Tages mit Cocktails auf eine tolle Zeit in Paris anstießen.

Der Tag meiner Heimreise glänzte abermals mit Traumwetter. Beste Voraussetzungen damit ich auch dass bis dahin stark vernachlässigte Sightseeing nachholen konnte.

I was already very excited about the upcoming journey to the capital of France and I became even more so when I had a look at the homepage of Le Balzac, the hotel I was going to stay at during the following days. So, I packed my suitcase and headed for the airport. After I had arrived in Paris I went straight to its famous Champs Elysées where the hotel was located. There, at the lovely Hotel Balzac, I made myself comfortable and I prepared myself for the workshop of the next day at the famous CMH University. The topics sounded really interesting to me. However, I didn´t  know exactly what to expect from sophisticatedly sounding headlines such as: Breakthrough concepts and services for the hospitality industry; Digital reputation management apps or also the Emerging web based applications or newest trends on hotel bookings by mobile.

After arriving at the university the next morning, where the Think Tank took place, I was introduced to the other participants, all of them being ambitious MBA students of CMH University in their final semester. What followed was an inspiring combination of lectures of successful company owners and lively discussions between all the participants. The organization of this day´s program was highly professional and I really have to admit, that I never felt more up to date in terms of "what´s going on in this business" than after having participated in this think tank.

During the remaining time I had the chance to explore the city of Paris and relax in its splendid parks and cafés, still dwelling on the busy but informative last months of preparation for the YHA 2010. After four exciting days in Paris I returned to my workplace full of new ideas to apply what I had learned during this stay.

Concluding, I can only recommend to all the young hoteliers to take the chance and apply for this award. Whatever the outcome might be, you will definitely profit from this experience, personally as well as professionally.
